Benny Scott is seeking a career as a professional race driver as well
as getting his doctorate degree in psychology, Benny Scott will devote
his 1972 racing effort to the Continental Championship series to gain
the competitive experience he will need next year to hopefully become
the first black driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. Scott began
racing in 1968 in a Renault and until now has not had much success in
the sport because of poor equipment. He finished third in the 1971 Cal
Club regional Formula B standings and has competed in mini-stocks.
Vanguard Racing, which along with sponsorship from Harbor Fuel Oil
Corp. Is behind Scott’s effort, is a new organization to help train black
drivers, mechanics, crew members and technicians for professional
racing. In preparation for the 1972 Continental Championship series,
Scott has competed in several early SCCA National races, currently
leading the Southern Pacific Formula A point standings.
