1974 was Dan Furey’s first season in pro Formula 5000 competition.
He started five of the seven races and finished three of those, 10th his
best placing, driving a ex-Mark Donohue Lola T330 powered by an
American Motors V8 engine. The year before, he competed in SCCA
National races in the Lola T192 Formula A (5000) class in preparation
for the pro circuit. He entered, but did not finish, three Trans-Ams in
1972 driving a Mustang and he terms 1971 ‘a disaster’ with a variety of
problems keeping him out of the Trans-Am and almost out of racing
entirely. In 1970 he competed in one Trans-Am event and was a
regular competitor in 1969 A sedan events on the National circuit. He
began road racing in 1966 in an H production Sprite in which he
competed until mid-season 1968. Prior to that, he raced a Hudson
Hornet on dirt ovals. Furey, employed at Fuel Savers Inc., has a
degree in mechanical engineering.
