My Formula 5000
An impressive driver regardless of competition or car type, Derek Bell
will be at the wheel of a converted Formula I McLaren Ml9 prepared
and entered by Lothar Motschenbacher. Best noted for his long
distance driving. Bell began his racing career in the early 1960's,
giving up a career in farming. He raced a Lotus Seven in 1964 and
stepped into a Formula 3 Lotus the next year. In 1967, he won nine
F/3 races in a Brabham, leading to a factory Ferrari ride the next year
in the Tasman Cup, Formula 2 and Formula I circuits. Bell co-drove to
the Buenos Aires World Manufacturers’ Cup victory in 1971, finished
second in two other events and twice was third in a Gulf/John Wyer
Porsche 917. Last year, he co-drove a new John Wyer Mirage, earning
enduro points at Watkins Glen, Spa and Nurburgring. Bell also entered
two L&M races last year in a McLaren M10B, placing eighth at Watkins
Glen and third at Road America.
