My Formula 5000
Grandson of the first man in Canada to own a car, and part of the
family which is Canada’s fourth largest employer (with a department
store chain) the 24-year-old bachelor from Toronto supplements his
income with activities as a stock broker and a rock festival promoter. . .
Last year(1969) he was the “Can” in Can-Am, putting together a
startling string of finishes in a McLaren M12-427 Chev. To finish fifth
overall in the series and win $51,000 . . . Last year’s car was rented to
Jerry Hansen, a fellow Wall Streeter, so Jerry could win the A Sports-
Racing class for the third straight year at the ARRC, then the car was
sold to Graeme Lawrence’s City of Edmonton backers .. . George is
the first Canadian ever hired to a full time job on a Formula 1 Grand
Prix team, for Castrol and BRM, and is learning rapidly about the F-1
BRM’s reliability traits. Also drove the Continental Championship last
year(1969) with a McLaren M10-Chevy and finished 16th in points and
$$$... His first trip to Mid-Ohio in 1968 with a McLaren M3-325 Ford,
resulted in a dnf, but last year he qualified sixth - even ahead of Amon,
Siffert, Motschenbacher, Follmer, Revson-- and finished sixth, despite
a spin from overheating which induced brain fade . . . We’d like to feel
his success in the Can-Am has prompted so many new Canadians to
enter the series this year and pick up some loot. .. This year the BRM
154 has failed to finish every race except St. Jovite where George was
third and won $8,300 . .. Started with an Alpine, then a Cobra before
going Group 7 . .. Despite his inherent wealth, he is as Common
(wealth) as any spectator and the life of the party . . . Mothers and
young girls envy his long, blond locks, guys envy the fantastic chicks
who often accompany him.
