John Gunn has been competing in Formula 5000 Championship series
competition since 1968, the first year 5-liter engine machines were
introduced. In 1975, a most disappointing year for Gunn, he entered
series driving a Lola T332 and finished 19th in the standings. His best of
five finishes were eighth place at Mid-Ohio and Road Atlanta. Gunn
started all seven events in 1974, his five finishes in a Lola T330 placing
him sixth in the championship standings—his best season to date. He
entered five races in 1973, driving a March 73A, but was not a high
finisher, and in ‘72 he competed in seven races to place 12th in the final
point standings. Out of five races in 1971, a fourth-place finish was his
best while he never dropped below 10th place in 10 races in 1970 to
place seventh in the year-end standings. Gunn has competed in the Can-
Am series, in 1974 driving a Lola T260 to fifth position in the Challenge
Cup standings; third place at Road America his best finish of the season.
The year he began racing, 1965, Gunn won the Southeast Division F
production title in an Alfa Romeo Spyder. Two years later he won the
Division’s G sports racing championship in a Lotus 23 and placed second
in the American Road Race of Champions. In 1968, Gunn co-drove to first
in the Sports category, eighth overall at the Daytona 24-Hours; finished
second in the under-2-liter class at the Sebring Trans-Am race and tied
for first place in the Southeast Division’s Formula A (5000) class.
